Exercise as Self-Care

It is no secret that exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle and none of this should be construed as medical advice, because we are not medical professionals. However, this is a gentle reminder that you are important, and your health should always be a priority.

When we are experiencing significant stress from a major life transition such as divorce or separation, physical activity becomes absolutely essential for our overall well-being. Exercise doesn’t need to be strenuous or take a long time to have benefits. You don’t even need to break a sweat. Just move your body. Be kind to yourself. Exercise is a form of self-care.

There are countless benefits to regular activity. On the most fundamental level, exercise increases endorphins, the feel-good brain chemicals. It can boost your mood, improve your concentration and alertness. Exercise can also improve your coping abilities and self-esteem. When you are participating in an activity that you enjoy, it can take your mind off the things that are causing your stress, grief, sadness or anxiety. When you are feeling overwhelmed, it can help distract you from negative thoughts and emotions. When you are feeling angry or frustrated, physical activity is a healthy outlet for that frustration. And when you are exercising with others, it offers an opportunity to connect with your friends and family or other social supports. Regular exercise can also help you sleep better, which can help you manage your stress more effectively. The list of benefits goes on and on, but the bottom line is that you will never regret getting up and taking care of your physical body.

We know that getting started can be intimidating. Even small steps in the right direction can make a noticeable difference in your physical and mental health. So start small, and then gradually increase your activity until exercise becomes part of your daily life. Take a walk, go for a swim, ride your bike or work in the garden. Spending time outdoors has even greater benefits. Yoga is another incredibly powerful exercise to bring peace to your mind and body. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Choose activities that bring you joy.
